Message of Unity on Christmas Day from ONPM.

Greetings to all our Christian brothers and sisters as we join you to celebrate yet another Christmas. As you celebrate this very special Christmas to mark the birth of Jesus Christ, I pray for peace, good health and happiness upon you and your household in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. May the joy and peace of this beautiful season and the peace that come with it permeate your entire household.
On behalf of the IMT, I congratulate all of you for this God's special blessing to witness yet another Christmas. May you all live long to witness many more of this very beautiful season with lots of God's sustenance and peace.
Let me quickly go on memory lane. As a child growing up, I remember vividly how my father always bought new cloths for us during Christmas and we also cooked food, one of the occasions we always see rice cooked in the house. I remember how we celebrated with our fellow Christian brothers and sisters though, we were not unaware of our very strong Islamic background. The celebration didn't stop us from rushing to the mosque as soon as there was call to prayer as we were visiting our fellow Christian friends.
I also remember vividly that during Sallahs, our Christian neighbours do the same. For several years, the only sallah meat I knew was one from a privileged  Christian  neighbour who would always ask the Mallam near our house to slaughter a ram and a cow for him. He would share everything to all Muslims. Because my parents couldn't afford that to slaughter even a lamb, that was our only source of annual sallah meat all while we were in Mubi. There would always be much more food in our house on Christmas days than we see on sallah days. I remember how I spend hours moving from one place to another, on the invitation and insistence of the Christians to help slaughter their chickens, goats and sheeps just because the Christians respected our concern about who and how the meats we eat are slaughtered.
My brothers and sisters, the only time our various religions mattered to us then was when it concern our relationship with our creator. The Christians would rush to put off their loud playing music at every call to prayer. It wasn't lost upon us that living peacefully and happily with our neighbours irrespective of their religions is enjoined by both faiths. I remember how a certain Christian woman close to our Mosque was all while we were in Mubi (then Gongola State) the only source of water to the mosque and the person who sweeps the mosque compound. I also vividly remember how certain Muslim man we all called *'No King as God'* always use his 504 pick up van to convey Christians to the Church and return from his market business when they close every Sunday. All free of charge.
What then happened to us? At what point did we begin to see a man of different faith as an enemy? If indeed we believe God is powerful, if indeed we believe God can do everything, if indeed we believe God can do as he wants, then anyone who fights or hates anyone because of his or her religion is belittling God. Because if God wills, he would have created all Nigerians as Christians or as Muslims. But in His wisdom which we all respect, He created some and directed their path to the Christian faith and created some of us and directed our path to the Islamic faith. I am today a Muslim because my father is a Muslim and it is same with most in both religions. Very few picked their religion themselves. Even that too, we cannot take it away from God's wills because from both faith, we believe All things happen as He wills.
My dear brothers and sisters, may I remind us all that Jesus Christ's biggest message to the world is that of love and peace. As we celebrate today, let us remember that the reason for this season is Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ epitomises peace, love, sharing and caring. It shouldn't end at how much you have to show off but, how little who have spared to give to the less privileged near you. May I sound it again to you that Jesus is Love and you can't celebrate him except by showing love.
Let me use this occasion to join our brothers and sisters in the Southern part of Kaduna State who cannot as they may wish, celebrate as some of us do today. We pray God Almighty bring peace to that part of our country and to every nook of Nigeria. Our prayers are with them as they are with all Nigerians who can't for one reason or another celebrate today. May God Almighty take away all that bother everyone.
My dear brothers and sisters, Merry Christmas.
