BREAKING: Highlife legend, Victor Olaiya, dies

High life legend, Dr Victor Olaiya, is dead.

He was 89.

A statement by his label, Evergreen Music Company, confirmed his death.

Its Managing Director Bimbo Esho said: “The entire music world wish to announce the death of a Legend of Highlife music, One of  the last man standing, the last of the original Dr Victor Abimbola Olaiya OON..

“We pray that the soul of the Doyen of highlife music find repose with his creator while wishing the family and entire music community the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”

This photo succinctly captures the medical state of most grassroot sports clubs in Nigeria. Due to inadequate medical intervention or lack of financial support, a lot of these young athletes resort to improvised means of healthcare. No form of first aid whatsoever, no medical personnel within the club structure. There are three major possible outcomes when an athlete gets injured. First, with proper care, the injuries heal and they recover fully. Secondly, the injury is managed enough to recuperate, but with some lingering pain. Thirdly, the injury is either not properly cared for or not cared for at all and it ends up getting much fatal.
