AFGRAS Foundation hosts 2nd Inter-School Chess competition for Secondary Schools in Kaduna State

The Kaduna State Chapter of the Advocates For Grassroots Sports Foundation held it 2nd Inter-School Chess competition for secondary schools on 1st February 2020 at the conference hall of the Asa Pyramid Hotel, Kaduna.

Twelve (12) schools from all over Kaduna State participated in the competition which was preceded by a lecture titled: “Chess as a tool for cognitive, social and economic development” delivered by Hon Bilal Halilu, a grassroots sports advocate, chess player and coach.

At the end of the fiercely contested competition, Master Mustapha Hamza from Adeyemo College, Kaduna emerged as the overall winner while Shamsudeen Oyewopo from Kalimat Academy and Surajudeen Abdulqayyum of Doka Boys came second and third respectively.

The event was graced by scores of Chess lovers from around the State including Mr Faisal Mohammed – Board member of the Kaduna State Football Association. Chess, it was concluded by the keynote speaker has the capability of enhancing the cognitive development of young players and indeed if well harnessed can be a vital social and economic development tool.

As a result of the success recorded and the desire to closely monitor and nurture the development of the young players, the leadership of AFGRAS Foundation have decided to change the competition frequency to quarterly rather than annually and also to increase the number of schools that participate from 12 to 20.
