Grassroot Sport- Medical state of Grassroot Sports in Nigeria - Olumide Omotosh

This photo succinctly captures the medical state of most grassroot sports clubs in Nigeria.
Due to inadequate medical intervention or lack of financial support, a lot of these young athletes resort to improvised means of healthcare. No form of first aid whatsoever, no medical personnel within the club structure.

There are three major possible outcomes when an athlete gets injured. First, with proper care, the injuries heal and they recover fully. Secondly, the injury is managed enough to recuperate, but with some lingering pain. Thirdly, the injury is either not properly cared for or not cared for at all and it ends up getting much fatal. With so many athletes in the system, the second and third possible outcomes are often the case.

Dreams crash, careers are dashed, just because proper healthcare is not considered as pivotal in the country. As a result, due to the frustration, a huge percentage of these athletes end up becoming a menace in the society.

This has become a cycle, one which does not seem like is going away anytime soon.
