UPDATE: FG, South West Governors reached an agreement on Amotekun.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) is in a closed door meeting with governors of the South-Western states at the State House in Abuja.

The meeting, which took off immediately after the closing of the first National Economic Council (NEC) meeting this year, is expected to dwell on the controversies surrounding the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun.

As at the time of filing this brief, the Attorney General of the Federation, (AGF) and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, had joined the meeting.

It would be recalled the South-West states, led by the Chairman of their forum, Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, had on January 9, 2020, launched the regional security outfit.

However, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Malami, had described the newly launched security outfit as illegal and a violation of the Constitution.

Malami’s verdict has been greeted with disapproval by leaders and opinion moulders from across the nation.

UPDATE

The federal government and governors of states in the south-west have reached the agreement to draw up a legal framework for the Western Nigeria Security Network code-named: Amotekun.

Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, disclosed this to state house correspondents at the end of a meeting Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had with the six governors from the region on Thursday.

Akeredolu said the legal framework will help resolve all “burning issues” surrounding the security network.

Asked if the governors failed to draw up the legal framework for the outfit before the launch on January 9, Akeredolu said the inspector-general of police and other “relevant security agencies” were consulted earlier.

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, who had described the outfit as illegal, was part of the meeting.

While the meeting was ongoing, Malami had insisted that the outfit was illegal.
